MARIA'S STORY

My name is Maria Griggs, and I’m writing to you with a heart full of gratitude and a mission full of hope.

Not long ago, I found myself in an overwhelming and uncertain place. I had to quickly leave a deeply emotionally abusive and controlling environment, and I arrived in Washington with little more than the clothes on my back—and my three beloved dogs, Osa, Fat Boy, and Sissy. They are my world.

With nowhere suitable to keep them, I was desperate. Sissy was pregnant, and despite my efforts to find temporary care, I was rapidly running out of options and resources. Then, right when I needed it most, Motley Zoo Rescue reached out. They had remembered my situation and emailed to check in on me—and what happened next changed everything.

By that time, Sissy had just given birth—her puppies were only about five days old. The boarding facility could no longer keep them, and I was about to leave town for my stepfather’s funeral in San Diego. I didn’t know what to do. That’s when Motley Zoo stepped in with open arms.

With compassion and no hesitation, Motley Zoo took in all three of my dogs and Sissy’s newborn puppies. They gave them a safe haven, cared for them lovingly, and even allowed me to stay close by welcoming me as a volunteer. Twice a week, I scoop poop, mop floors, and clean kennels—and honestly, it’s the highlight of my week. It brings me peace, purpose, and the joy of seeing my dogs while they’re in loving hands. The team at Motley Zoo Rescue—Garry, Pate, Jme, their dedicated staff, and every single volunteer—pour their hearts and energy into this mission. They’ve built a special place for these animals, giving them healing, love, training, and a fresh start. They work tirelessly restoring the property, rehabbing the barn, keeping the grounds clean, and making their dream sanctuary a reality.

But like all small rescues, they could do even more with the right tools. And that’s where I come in—and hopefully, you too.

As a solution-minded volunteer and someone deeply moved by the kindness I've received, I’m organizing a fundraiser for Motley Zoo Rescue, set for July 27, 2025, in Monroe, Washington. I’m reaching out to businesses, organizations, and generous individuals like you to ask for your help.

During my time volunteering, I’ve been quietly taking note of what could make their lives easier and their impact even greater—such as a utility vehicle, a small dump trailer, tools, and other property-improvement resources. When I lived in Ohio, I had a utility vehicle that helped me clear land, haul firewood, and transport building materials. I know firsthand how helpful these kinds of items can be, and I see how they could benefit Motley Zoo in their mission.

That’s why I’m hoping to raise funds or secure in-kind donations for tools, equipment, and other items that would greatly support the rescue and its continued growth.

I’m reaching out to ask if you might be willing to help—whether by:

  • Donating an item, monetary contribution, or service directly

  • Offering discounted pricing on something from our wishlist

  • Providing something we could raffle off at the fundraise

  • Or referring me to someone else who may be able to help

Thank you for hearing my story and for considering supporting a rescue that saved my family when I had nowhere else to turn.
